Silver Spring, Bethesda, Surrounding Area Suggestions

  • 5

We've just about gotten comfortable with the Baltimore area and the restaurants there, and our daughter, who graduates from Loyola next month, has taken a job in DC and plans to live in Silver Spring. Looking for any recommendations and ideas. We'll be down (from NY)around May 17 for graduation and plan to have dinner in her new area. Thanks!

  1. There are so many good restaurants in Bethesda. What type of cuisine are you looking for and proce range?

Since we are totally unfamiliar with the area, any and all suggestions are welcome. Since we will be a group of six when we are visiting for graduation I am hoping to find something in the moderate price range.

Sushi is always fun and two very good places in Bethesda are Tako Grill and Matuba. Both are very good, some of the best in the whole DC area, but just as a matter of personal preference I like Matuba.

        Matuba Bethesda
        4918 Cordell Avenue
        Bethesda, MD

        Tako
        7756 Wisconsin Ave.
        Bethesda, MD

Houston's is very popular for groups and people who like american cuisine. It's moderately priced and the food is decent. Nothing to rave about, but it's a crowd pleaser.

For very good Mexican and amazing margaritas go to Rio Grande. It's an upscale Mexican place with moderate prices. The fajitas are the best thing on the menu. The beef is tastier than the chicken.

Great Thai food is Andaman. My friend from Thailand loved it and all the staff are from Thailand. If you like Pad Thai, it's a house specialty here.

The last two recommendations are expensive, but very very good. I love to go to either of them for birthdays etc. At both places entrees run from $17 - 28.

Cesco - Great Italian...not your typical lasagna etc. It's more a Tuscan style. I love the veal there.

Blacks - It's a hip place that serves very fresh, innovative seafood. It has the second best mussels I have ever had in the DC area.

    2. One of the most fun dining experiences I've ever had in the area is at a Silver Spring restaurant called Roger Miller. It's West African food and very good if you're looking for something adventurous. It's a small place but the food and decor are truly unique!

      1. Hi Susan - it's not clear from your request whether you are looking for a restaurant for a celebratory graduation meal, in particular, or are looking for good places to dine while you are in the area.

If you are looking for a place for a celebration type meal, I'm afraid I can't think of anything in Silver Spring, itself. Driving a few miles around the beltway to Bethesda, or heading downtown, are your best options there.

If you are looking for casual dining options, Silver Spring and close neighbors Wheaton and Langley Park have good international and bargain restaurants.

Can you give us a better idea of what you are looking for?
