Has anyone been to the new bakery Cakelove on 1506 U Street? The baker/owner supplies the cakes for Teaism, at least the one in Dupont Circle. Is Cakelove the type of place where you can sit leisurely with a slice of cake and cofee, or is it strictly a retail outfit?

not sure on the low-down except for these facts: my roommate got a birthday cake from there last weekeend and it was UNBELIEVABLY good -- chocolate with choc. icing and a whipped cream filling. Dense, slightly bitter chocolate. wonderful.
the baker is apparently a gorgeous young ex-lawyer. Believe it is a retail outlet but not sure what else. Can highly recommend in either case.

Uh . . . folks, I think the baker is a guy (men can be gorgeous too, ya know!) If it's who I think it is, the Washington Post food section did a profile on him about a year or so ago. He was a government attorney operating his cake business through a website (can't remember the URL).

Hmmm.....does she make tortes? Divorce cakes?

The reason she quit law is probably because of the new ruling that medical experimentation now performed on laboratory rats can freely be done on lawyers. This was decided based upon three justifications:

1. There is no human/animal rights group that will protest any mistreatment of lawyers (as there are for rats and animals).
2. There is an overpopulation of lawyers, especially here in the greater Washington area. So the herd needs to be culled.
3. Most importantly, there are some things that rats just won't do!

The gorgeous, young ex-lawyer is indeed male, named Warren Brown. And he is indeed gorgeous. He made People magazine's most eligible bachelor's list two years ago. A link to his website below will take you from there to the Washington Post article about him, as well as to the write-up in People magazine.

Last year, when the Wayne Thibaux exhibit was at the Phillips Collection, they did a promotion with Warren. Since Thibaux’s paintings featured a lot of cakes, they had Warren come and do a cake-tasting. His cakes were stupendous. But my girlfriend/co-worker and I were not just enamored with his cakes, we were enamored with HIM! He is quite eloquent. When the People magazine feature came out, my co-worker/friend ripped out his picture and hung it up on her office door.

Come October, when her birthday rolled around, I decided to get her one of Warren’s cakes for her birthday. I called the number from the website, and despite all the publicity, he still answers his own phone. We talked about cake selection, and he told me about a new one he had developed called “My Downfall.” Chocolate, vanilla, liqueur, and I don’t know what else. Then I asked about delivery. He said he had a limited delivery area (the store on U Street was not open at this time). He said he could do Bethesda where we worked. Then, surprised, I clarified, “You do your own delivery?” He said yes, and I told him that in that case, he would be as much a surprise as the cake would be. I think I might have scared him a bit when I told him about his picture on her office door, but he gamely went along with the plan.

When he delivered the cake, my co-worker friend just about died! He gamely posed for pictures, and even embarrassedly autographed his picture for her. It was truly a wonderful experience. And the cake was absolutely fabulous, too.

If the cakes weren’t enough to sell Warren Brown’s business, his good nature might make up for it. Patronize this man! He deserves it!!!

Debbie

Thanks Debbie. A hearty recommendation, indeed.

Although I don't think I'll be seeking him out for his good looks, it is a joy to see this board used for such a wonderful purpose as scouting out and pulicizing quality, little-known and deserving food purveyors like Warren.

On my way to Ben's Chili Bowl I happened to spot "Cakelove." Although this thread is three years old, the cakes are still as good as reported: I had a chocolate cupcake with orange frosting and a hazlenut rollup with lemon frosting. They were terrific! As good as our best bakeries here in Chi-town. (Ben's Chili Half-Smoke made a great chaser for the cupcake!)
