Went to Arizona in upper Fells Point last night, and really enjoyed it. I now see why comparisons to Tapas Teatro are not fair, it also is far away from Tex-Mex, but it is a wonderful find.

Last month I went to the Riveria Maya in Mexico for the weekend, but eating at Arizona last night felt more like being in a different country than on my vacation. Limited English spoken, no hurry service, menu completely in spanish.

I went with my girlfriend and another couple around 7:30, and we were the only people in the dining room, while 2 or 3 people held down the bar. We ordered a pitcher of Sangria that arrived after a fairly long wait, setting the pace of the evening to come. Although I've had better sangria, it was pretty darned tasty and a must if you go. We tried to ask some questions to the waitress about the menu, as no one at the table speaks Spanish and even when we could decipher a dish (Fish Combo) we had no idea what that really means, but she didn't speak much English. After struggling a while, she went and found someone with better English to help us out. The dishes we got were all quite good, the grilled octopus with peppers was delicious and the plate of clams was good. I had some kind of stewed chicken with shrimp over rice that was delicious, others had a seafood stew which was okay, not great, a grilled platter of sausage, pork, beef, and a fried egg, and a platter of chicken and pork. Nothing was over $10 - except the large pitcher of sangria at $15.

The experience was a lot of fun, and I'll definitely be going back. I wish places like this were busier, they deserve to be.

  1. Thanks Slippery for your post; after reading it, I got a hankering and convinced a group of friends to hang there last night. Had a fabulous time. We got the tapas platter at the bar--and while we were there, they passed around free appetizers--and it was very good. The calamari was perfectly cooked; also the cerviche was very tasty. Then we went back to the dining room and had a very nice dinner.

You'll be happy to know that there were several other tables there when we went, so perhaps the word is getting around!
