Eichankrantz's - Baltimore

Went to Eichenkrantz's in Highlandtown last Saturday and had some good, simple German food.
It is an anti-trendy restaurant that caters to an older crowd, but our experience as young professionals was great. When we walked in, the hostess asked if we wanted to sit in the downstairs dining room or upstairs with the piano music. We wisely chose upstairs, and enjoyed some very pleasant, relaxing tunes being played on a baby grand throughout our dinner. When we arrived a little before eight, there were only a handful of tables full in the large room - set up like a wedding reception with quite a few large round tables. I'm not sure what type of business they had earlier in the evening, but it was slow while we were there.
We had salads made with iceberg lettuce (it is Highlandtown!), jager schnitzel, saurbrauten, and sides of red cabbage. It was all delicious, I even enjoyed my salad - it had been a long time since I ate iceberg lettuce. It was all served on some of the finest white, 50's diner style stoneware dishes that I've seen this side of a truckstop. No dark blue glaze to be found.
It was really wonderful, in a Baltimore way, and I can't wait to return. I hope they continue the piano -(Fri's and Sat's, I think) because it really added to the experience and created a wonderful atmosphere that makes me want to go back. These people really deserve to be busier - I'll keep Eichenkrantz's in mind when I don't have reservations on a Weekend night and don't feel like waiting a long time.
If you do go, make sure you put something in pianist's tip jar.
Memories. Many, many years ago (early 1970s), when I was still in my twenties, sometimes my friends and I would go to Eichankrantz's on Saturday nights. Great German food, and an Ooomp-pa-pa German band. The guys in the band were real German, real old, and took this stuff seriously!
We would have a blast. The band played as long as you would listen, and you could polka all night. Where else but in East Balamer? Is there still a German band on weekends?
