B'more sushi places

Someone was asking me about sushi and I wasn't sure what to tell them. I mostly go to Edo out in Timonium, but my friend is car-less and can't get out that way easily. What about Kawasaki -- isn't that the grand daddy of sushi in Baltimore? Also it's been awhile since I've been to Matsuri, or Minato, or that place in Cross Street Market.

So, Charm City Chowhounds, where do you like to go for fish? Somebody's got to have more recent susi experience than I do!

And does anyone know exactly what year Kawasaki did open? Were they really the first?

  1. Nichiban is the best place I've been. Love that place in the Cross Street market but Nichiban has them beat. I live 15 mins from DC but my cousins and I drive up there every chance we get (I got them hooked too). They're at 1035 S. Charles, just a block up from the Market. I've only been to Kawasaki once and had sashimi there and it was excellent. But for whatever reason, I've never been back. I don't know if they were the first, but I know they've been around for at least 8 years. Sushi Chalet used to get a lot of business. They were in Fells Point and pretty decent to be as cheap as they were, but they were more the fast food version of sushi. Not sure when they closed, but I think they've been gone for a good while. Outside of Nichiban, Kaz sushi in DC is it, if you can manage to get a table.

I like Kawasaki on Charles. They have a cafe in Fell's Point too that is also good. Ive never been to Nichiban but now I want to!

    2. Kawasaki has been around since at least 1988 when I first went there. I work in downtown B'more and frequent several places. I forget the name, but there is a place next to the bike shop across from the Cross Street Market that has an *excellent* lunch deal. 6 pieces of sushi (2 ea. tuna, salmon, snapper), CA roll, miso soup, salad & nooles...$6.95! WOOHOO!
Sushi Chalet has been closed for about a year now (it was on Charles Street).
