Ortanique DC--a review

I had lunch yesterday at Ortanique, a Caribbean-inspired place on 11th between G and H NW and thought it merited a review. The place is in a fairly commercial-looking building, but has been done up very nicely. Surprisingly for lunchtime they had a pianist who played virtually non-stop during the 90 minutes I was there (to my ear, he played a bit too loudly, since it was a business lunch and I was trying to hear my companion, but that is me).

The menu was quite varied, and had a very nice selection that includes pretty much all the famous Caribbean dishes--conch, jerk, seviche, etc. They are participating in the restaurant week promotion, though neither of us went for it (despite it sounding very tempting). Instead I had a very good bbq shrimp sandwich, which was served on a very good baguette with a mango salsa and a side of good fries and a small salad. One complaint--the menu I was shown as I waited for my companion listed the sandwich at $9, but on the menu they gave us at the table it was $12. I was not going to make a big deal of it, but it was annoying nonetheless.

Looks like a nice place to go for dinner, too.
