SF Chronicle's top 100 bay area restaurants

  • d

The Chronicle published their top 100 bay area restaurants today. I know how people here generally feel about the Chronicle's rankings and reviews, but I'm still fairly new to the bay area (moved to SF in November from L.A.) and would be interested to see what people think.

Hi Dave, welcome to San Francisco! I haven't had a chance to read all 100 mini-reviews in detail and have only scanned the list of restaurants by cuisine to get a feel for the choices. Some initial impressions - 1) happy to see turnover of the list; 2) lack of exploration of Asian cuisine with too much attention to decor over deliciousness, e.g., Khan Toke; and 3) lazy choices in the Napa Valley which has been exploding with new quality restaurants in downtown Napa in the last year, and not to take anything away from Foothill, Bistro Jeanty and Bouchon, but don't have "names" attached.

Some of the places that have gone downhill are Betelnut, Gordon's, Globe, L'Amie Donia, Thirsty Bear, and Zibbibo. But maybe they're still good enough to rate in the top 100.

We've had a lot of discussions on this board about Boulevard, Kokkari, Mariposa, and Slanted Door being overhyped. This is the price of fame, I guess.
