Return visit to The 2 Amys

We went back to the 2 Amys last night...at 8 pm on a Tuesday night, it was virtually full, so they have definitely struck a chord in the neighborhood.

Our meal was good, but I am afraid that I still prefer the pizza at Pizzeria Paradiso...The problem with the pizza (in my opinion) is that it is too puffy--it is nicely baked, but the overall texture misses the important balance of breadiness and crispness. It is too bad, because the ingredients are quite nice. I had a "ripieno"--a calzone--stuffed with ricotta, mozzarella, and pesto, which was good--a drawback is that the filling is a little loose. But I had the leftover piece cold for lunch today and it was improved.

My wife very much enjoyed the roasted pepper and anchovy appetizer.

The other thing that I noted is that the pizzas are about a third to a half as big as the small pizzas at Pizzeria Paradiso, making them somewhat too big for one person, but not big enough to serve two. I wonder why they don't offer two sizes.

So we will probably go back, but not as often as we would if they had transplanted Pizzeria Paradiso to Cleveland Park. Of course, the room is much more spacious and less noisy than Paradiso...a definite plus.

  1. I forgot to mention that Tom Sietsema was asked about pizza today in his on-line chat and he said that his review of 2 Amys will appear on December 2......so if he liked it (and I got the impression that he did), it may be mobbed for a while.

Washingtonian reviewed it this month. To sum up the review of the pizza in a single word -- "soggy." Still, they remain optimistic, as I'm sure we all do.

Sietsema review of 2 Amy's appears in tomorrow's Post(Sunday, Dec. 2); it is pretty much a rave--which surprises me somewhat. But I will continue to give the place a chance......

Had dinner at 2 Amys last Saturday night. Arrived at 7:30 and had to wait over an hour. We went to the old Zebra room and nursed a bottle of wine while we waited (6 of us) We were seated in the "bay window" at 2Amys, quite cramped. Overall, the pizza was ok. Lots of dough a la Generous Georges- puffy bubbles in the dough which allows less room for the more pricey ingredients. Th dough to filling ratio is off here. Lots of plates in the restaurant with the outer rims of the dough left uneaten. I like the sizing of the pizza at Pizza Paradisio better. Blood orange sorbet was great, though. All in all too pricey and too
noisy- also the chairs were not comfy.
