L'Auberge Chez Francois: It's Back!

  • j

Thursday night six of us revisted L'Auberge for the first time since the disastrous fire. It hasn't changed a bit! Just like before there was not a single place in the parking lot at 8:00PM (this was good meaning that business hadn't suffered).
This is not meant to be a review but all of us thoroughly enjoyed the evening. A Bouilibasse (sp.) appetizer was superb, better than one I had at Le Dome in Paris one month ago (credited with Paris' best bouilibasse in Fodor's). The Grand Marnier souffle is the equal of any that I have ever had anywhere.
Overall this was a wonderful experience at a comfortable, romantic Washington institution that has been sorely missed. I believe it is still a bargain with most meals in the range of $46 to 52 for appetizer, salad, entree and dessert with several up charges for dishes (i.e. $6.00 for the souffles; but consider that a similar souffle is over $20.00 al a carte at many New York and Chicago restaurants).
With wine, tax and tip L'Auberge Chez Francois is as good of $150.00 that one can spend in a restaurant anywhere. Yes, there is better food elsewhere but you might spend double...or more...and it will not be anymore "special."
