Ever wanted to pretend you were Phyllis Richman?
Here's your opportunity. I work for an organization called Brainfood, and we use food as a tool to build life skills with youth in a fun and creative setting.
This coming week we have an activity in which our students go to a restaurant, sample some of its offerings, and put together a critique modeled after a professional review. We usually take a food journalist with us to walk the students through the process.Problem is...this year we don't have a food journalist lined up! Would you like to fill in? You could dress up and act out the role you've always longed to fill!

This might sound like a joke, but it's not. We would really like to have a special guest to make it a great experience for the students. We work with 14-18 year old students from three public schools, in groups of 10-12.

We will be doing this activity next week. You could either come to a class before the actual restaurant visit and just talk about the fundamentals of food writing, or accompany us on the restaurant visit. Dates are: Mon, Oct.22-Thurs, Oct.25.

Let me know if you're interested. Should be fun!!

Thank you,

Gayle Maslow

  1. I'm interested. I'm strictly an amateur, but interested in food and travel writing. You can contact me at the e-mail address above, I should be able to make one of those dates.

    1. I'd be more comfortable accompanying you on the restaurant visit than in speaking in front of the class. Which restaurants are you going to on which days?

Hi, I am the Program Coordinator for the After School Program. Gayle asked me to respond to your message. Our office is on 15th and Euclid, NW Dc, so if you live in the neighborhood that would work out great. Our program runs between the hours of 4pm-6pm. We are going to the Austin Grill on Wednesday and Thursday October 24 and 25. We would love it if you could come to our class on Monday or Tuesday because we want to give the students some practice before actually going to the restaurant. Are you sure you don't want to give a short presentation? It can be filled with activities or whatever as long as the students get an idea of what a restaurant review is.

      2. Gayle,

Could be fun. I occasionally was Phyllis Richman's guest on her rounds. Nothing I said ever made it into her reviews, but what I ordered did.

I have written some restaurant reviews myself, notably for Penthouse.

My availability depends on geography. I live in NW DC.

        Stephen B.
