For anyone who frequents some of the "expense account" places around town, I'm posting a note of caution. The Seasons restaurant in the Four Seasons Hotel in Georgetown has been a perennial favorite of mine, and for many reasons, will remain a coveted destination. It's a beautiful place, virtually tucked away in a park like setting, perfectly polished service from the front desk to the busing, a great wine list, and an elegant, leisurely meal. The food last Saturday, however, left a lot to be desired. The ingredients listed in many dishes puzzled me as a reader, and obviously confused the chef as well. A pork and veal terrine was underseasoned and left too "counry-style pate" chunky. Caeser salad was artistically presented, but difficult to eat and under-dressed. Fish (halibut and salmon), usually prestine, tasted less than sea-like and was overcooked and overcoated. Crabcakes and softshell crabs were better, but many finer examples can be found around the city at three-quarters the price (despite not liking Oceanaire, I do think they are serving one of the best crabcakes in the city.) The sole meat at the table was a perfectly cooked rack of lamb, shockingly devoid of any lamb flavor. I hate that I didn't say anything when asked "How was your meal?" I'm quick to praise the things I liked when asked this question, but reluctant to pan, as my experience shows that owners/hosts invariably get defensive and then insist on removing items from the bill, leaving me feeling like I cheated them out of revenue. After all, nothing was inedible. How about the rest of you? Do you answer the question honestly? Or do you make a mental note and schedule a different restaurant for your next big occassion?
