Chez Nous

I had a disappointing lunch at Chez Nous on Saturday. This was too bad because I had food people in from out-of-town. I had a wonderful dinner there 6 or so months ago when it was newer, everything just shined.

Part of our problem was ordering poorly. We should have tried a little larger variety. We started with two orders of the borek, the spinach-cheese filo pastries, the tortilla espanole and the fries with romesco (or was that the tortilla). I would not have chosen that combo, but two different people asked for two potato things. I find tortilla boring, and the fries just don't work for me with the menu, but they do stay crisp cold. The borek were great.

The lamb chop is not on the lunch menu, but the waiter was nice enough to ask for us and the kitchen was nice enough to prepare. These are served as finger food with long cleaned bones to use as handles. We ordered two rare (not for me) and two medium rare and it really came out rare and medium, but they were still very jucy and tasty and I am just crazy about the lavender salt for dipping. With this we had a spinach salad, it was fine, and a terrible salad nicoise. The tuna was like rubber and coated with a very harsh raw cumin spice mix. I would have liked it rarer. The worst thing was the tuna was some odds and ends of assorted pieces, some in long strips and some in chunks. Seemed like leftovers.

The desserts were nothing special. The Canalis Bordelais (hope I got that right) were fine, they are sold in the bakery around the corner too. The meyer lemon tart got mixed reviews, I thought it too sweet and did not like the addition of candied lemon peel. One person like it, though. The chocolate pot de creme was not good, like a soft bland ordinary chocolate pudding, no one liked it.

Very limited wines available. We ordered a bottle of Pinot Grigio that was pleasantly different from the thin tongue curling variety. This one had a softness and some fruit tones. I liked it--don't remember what it was, though. 5 people inc tax and tip $150.

I would have liked to try another dish or two to round out our selection, but our group was not so hungry. When I had dinner, I remember some really good gnocci, and some nice fruit galette for dessert. There was walnut bread and cheeses offered and the chef Laurence Jossel was running food to the tables and making sure everyone was happy.

If I had only had the lunch, I'm not sure I would return. One of my friends said she was disappointed too. Since I still remember that great dinner I'm willing to go again and order more carefully.
