There are so many good Chinese restaurants in Chinatown and Clement, I have found it difficult to make recommendations to out of town friends. I have been recommending Empress of China (which I personally like at that level) and have never had any complaints. I have had small dinners parties and major banquets, and never disappointed. There are more "authentic" places...and some cheaper (Great Eastern, for example), but all in all, EofC is pretty good and reliable. If you can get in the special room, the view of Coit Tower is great. Of course, on the big night you may not get in at all.
