farmer's markets

  • s

Is it ok to ask a non-restaurant food question? I've been trying to figure out where and when all the farmer's markets are in the area.

I go to the one at the Sheridan School, on Alton Place NW one block east of Reno Road, Tuesdays 4:30 -6:30 and Saturdays ? - 11:00. And I used to go to Eastern Market on Saturdays, ? - late afternoon. I'd like to find one on Fridays -- there is one near the Dept of Agriculture, 12th and Independence SW, but that's not convenient for me.

  1. Late afternoon on Saturday is too late to go to Eastern Market. The venders are usually set up by 8am and not much stuff is left by noon.

There are two farmers' markets listed that are open on Fridays (my list is a year old, but farmers' market listings don't seem to change for years):

USDA Farmers Market -- Dept. of Energy, 1000 Indenpendence Avenue, alternate Fridays 10a-2p. Producers Only.

D.C. Farmers' Market -- Fifth Street and Neal Place NE, Year Around, Fridays and Saturdays 7a-7p.

One thing you need to be careful about regarding farmers' markets: try to go to Producers Only ones. Markets that are not billed as Producers Only (Eastern Market is one of those) could sell produce from anywhere.

Try the one at DuPont Circle (north exit of Metro) on weekends.
