Chowhounds Get Together at Full Kee
Gary Cheong and his friend Karen--visiting Chowhounds from NYC-- joined my wife Diana and me for lunch at Full Kee on Sunday. We lucked out and they had soft-shells that day....they were fabulous. We also enjoyed the Hong Kong style wonton soup, stir fried leek flowers, shredded pork and bean curd in black bean sauce, and Amoy style rice noodles (without the curry powder). Unfortunately the bitterness problem in the clam with black bean sauce dish seems to be continuing, so we ended up sending that dish back.
We enjoyed the expedition and meeting Gary and Karen.
I reiterate my offer to meet any Chowhound for a meal at Full Kee....it is a tough job, but someone has to do it.
I've eaten twice with Gary, and I'm amazed that such a skinny guy can put the food away. I was in DC two weeks ago (a great vacation) and was tempted to take you up on your offer. But I had to take my wife sight-seeing, and didn't know if I'd have time to do Full Kee. As luck would have it, I did have time (barely). As for "DC...the worst chowhound city" not so! Orlando pops to my mind for that honor. But I didn't have time to search out the chow there either.
It's a tough job and Jim Z. does it well!! Thanks for the hospitality. I heartily recommend any chowhound who goes to DC take Jim up on his offer.
The soft-shell crabs were the most AMAZING I've had this year. Very tempted to take that Metroliner down again for one more order of it. I hear from my chef friend Ann Cashion that the state of MD is considering ending the soft-shell season in the next couple of weeks. Go to Full Kee and get 'em while you can.
