Ok, I know that it isn't the nicest, trendiest street in town, but N. Broadway in Baltimore has a thriving Latin American population. There are new restaurants popping up all the time in this area. I went San Salvatore (I think that's the name.. on Broadway) and the food was merely OK. Nothing to write home about- it was served lukewarm.

Has anyone eaten at Eltaquido Mexiciano on Eastern Avenue? I've been considering checking it out. Any more recommendations for restaurants in this area?

Hi, I used to eat at El Taquito Mexicano regularly when I lived in Baltimore (about 4 years ago). I always thought that their tacos al carbon were the real deal. They'd at least recognize them on the left coast. I highly recommend it but don't know if it's gone downhill.

BTW - Peter's Inn - kitty corner across the street from ETM (with the bright red door) used to be the greatest little bar in Fells Point. Harley riders and students and everyone in between went there - occasionally the food is stunningly good and there were lots of little niches and alcoves to sort of hang out in.

Hi Cap Hill,
I actually went there (El Taquito Mexicano) last week. I was determined to try it. I got the pollo adobado (sp?). It was very good, not spectacular. The meat was very tender- fell off the bone. The sauce that it was in was excellent- spicy. I dipped my tortillas in it to get every last bit. I was slightly disappointed in the side dishes(beans and rice mixed w/corn). I'll have to try the tacos- a lot of people around me were eating them. Also, the service wasn't great- we ordered some chips and dip and they never brought them. (We decided that there was so much food that we didn't need them) However, they were on our bill and we had to have them taken off. It was busy in there, so it was probably just a mistake.

I really like Peter's Inn too. My neighbor Katy used to be the chef there -she was probably the one there when you went. I've eaten at her home- great food! They have a new chef now. I never went there when Katy was the chef, but I've heard that it was much better than it is now. It was still pretty good when I went. I'll go back.

Have you been to Ze Mean Bean? It's probably currently my favorite restaurant in the area. It's fairly inexpensive too compared to most of the other restaurants down there. They should stick to what they do best- Russian food. (I got some type of a special there once- I think it was fish- overseasoned!) The borsch is very good. I get it with a sampler platter that they have in their appetizers section. It has a little bit of everything and it's not expensive. It gives you as much food as the pierogi platter, but at a better price. Just a tip for the chowhounds! And now they have a liquor license! I expect it will be flooded with folks pretty soon now...

Any other restaurants that you like in the area? I live in Fells Point, so if I can walk to it I'm there!

Hi,

Actually, I don't get to Fells very much anymore and my memory is terrible. These days I basically get up there to brew beer with friends in Hampden who like to cook so we never eat out anymore. Aaagh.

I do like Frazier's Taproom in Hampden. Questionable steaks, but atmosphere only found in Baltimore or a John Waters film. Go to the original, not the new one. I also used to like to go to the Lithuanian Hall in Pigtown. $0.50 cent beers, (of course it's miller or something), cheap pool, Pierogi dinners on Friday nights, polka's on the jukebox. What more could you ask for. Take a couple of tough guys with you tho.

I'll try to check out Ze Mean Bean sometime. I've heard great things about it from my Balto friends.

When you go to Hampden, check out Suzy Soba. It's across the street from Cafe Hon. I've heard from a few people who love Japanese food that it's really good and not expensive. I haven't had a chance to get down there yet though.

Thanks for the tips!
