Thanks again for the info. Unfortunately--with four kids
under the age of twelve--it was McD's and its clones.
I didn't even get the chance to eat at Scholl's.
Still, I think I went one better than your suggestions.
My D.C. cousin made a couple dozen Maryland Chessapeak
Bay Blue crabs for Sunday lunch. A lot of work and pain
but oh the pleasure.
On Schwartz show you mentioned a donut place in Westport
CT, that the Sterns turned you on to. I didn't get the
name or address. May I pry that from you?
I'm sure the reference was to "Coffee An'," the very best reason to go to Westport. The address is 343 N. Main St. (203) 227-3808. Open from Mon-Fri from 7:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.; Saturday until 4:00 p.m.
May I particularly recommend the powdered sugar, cinnamon, and chocolate doughnuts? (Although I prefer the powdered sugars, I must say that the cinnamon is particularly good in its class -- ordinarily I don't even try these, because I'm a sucker for powdered sugar doughnuts, but these are the best I've ever had. And although I prefer non-all-chocolate chocolate doughnuts, these are paragons of their classThe non-cake doughnuts are a relative disappointment).
Coffee An's are far better than any NYC doughnut I've tried, and I'm known to go many, many miles out of my way to stop there. In fact, a friend tried to get me to go to Nantucket by saying I could stop at Coffee An' on the way! Don't waste your breath pretending to eat breakfast here. Eat ONLY dougnuts and you will be VERY happy.
Connecticut is a wonderful food state, probably the most underrated chowhound state in our country.

dave, right with you on the underratedness of CT food. The state's
one of my faves. Just start with Coffee An', Louis Lunch, Peppy's
(and that OTHER pizzeria, the "S" one), and you're in good
shape. Oh, and maybe you know the Hay Day markets, expensive but
sources for all manner of rare and antique fruit/veg varieties.
I was just in Old Saybrook for a few days, and I had better fried
clams than last week in Essex, MA (considered the end-all/be-all of
fried clams). I'll post the details somewhere around here,

It was fried clams that I had most in mind when I thought of Connecticut's neglect. It's the only fish or seafood that I actually prefer fried, and CT places seem to have a feel for how to do it.
I've been to all the places you've mentioned in CT except, I'm ashamed to say, Louis Lunch. Are the hamburgers special or are they "just" of historical interest?
Isn't it interesting that New Haven has some claim to be the birthplace of the hamburger and pizza as Americans consume it today?
I assume Sally's is the other pizza place you were trying to remember. Haven't been to Pepe's in years. It's the kind of place that people were complaining about going downhill 30 years ago. Yet it still seems to crank out estimable pizzas.
Of course, Jane and Michael Stern are from CT, and although I often disagree with them about many places, I've found them to be excellent when discussing their states's restaurants.

Agreed. In the last two weeks I've had fried
clams at Woodman's in Essex, MA (right next to
Ipswich, home of the clams)--the place that
claims to have invented fried clams--and also
in Old Saybrook, CT. I liked the ones in CT
Louis Lunch IS wonderful (just as much for
ambiance as food, yes), but you've got to keep
an open mind. It's not the kind of hamburger
you're used to. They're cooked in this bizarre
conveyer-belt toaster; very juicy and delicate.

I wasn't "TRYING" to remember...I remember
fine. It's just that I'm a loyal Pepe's
customer, and I don't say the "S" word.

I agree completely. I have a copy of their CT
restaurant guide...long out of print, but still
tres useful. The reason is this: when they
travel, they "cheat" a bit by asking local
journalists, etc, for tips. So they often write
about tourist traps. But they do their own
scouting in their home state of CT, and find

Good for you re: Sally's/Pepe's debate.
If this were a New Haven-based website, I guarantee you that Pepe's would get many mentions in the "Gone Downhill" area. Pepe's has always been going downhill. And they still serve great pizza .
My biggest complaint about the Sterns is that I have great sympathy for their being charmed by the ambiance and service at homey diners, it's cruel to upgrade the rating of the food because of the appeal of the setting. A few times, I've gone a mile or more out of my way and ended up in a charming place with mediocre food.
But you never know. One of my favorite picks of theirs was almost a throwaway -- a doughnut place in Rutland Vermont. I go more than an hour out of my way, when visiting friends in New Hampshire, to stop there. Great plain doughnuts, in particular at Jones' Bakery.

hello, everybody,. of course i'm biased because i'm the brother of Diana, the owner of LE VIEUX LOGIS, a restaurant located on Old Georgetown Road in the Washington suburb of Bethesda, but i thought nevertheless i had to tell everybody that in my book (and stomach and memory) the food and atmosphere at LOGIS are the best in the area.

I see we have reached the point of a philosophical dilemma. What do you do when you are hungry enough to eat a full meal but you like one specialty of a restaurant far more than its other fare? To be honest, I've only tasted bites of others' breakfasts at Coffee 'An. It's not so much that I'm crticizing the other food at Coffee 'An. If I lived in Westport, I'm sure I'd eat other things there.
But to me, eggs would be "empty calories." I'd prefer just eating another doughnut, because I can get eggs elsewhere. If eating a balanced diet means eating a balanced diet WITHIN any particular meal, I'm in deep trouble.
