I'm with HdinCentralME; Portsmouth Brewery is one of my favorites on the Seacoast. If you go, order a side of fries with chipotle mayo dipping sauce. Just trust me. Every single person who hasn't trusted me has tasted my order and then eaten the whole thing. Though I have less at stake if you don't heed my advice I can definitely guarantee you’ll be missing out.
The clam chowder is good too!

If you are into good English beers, you can find some at Molly Malone's pub (Penhollow Road), Muddy River Smoke House (Market Square--easily the largest beer selection around), and Coat of Arms (Fleet Street), all within walking distance of Market Square.

My suggestion with regard to food is Muddy River for good BBQ, Jumpin' Jay's Fish Cafe (Seafood), Lindbergh's Crossing, and 43 Degrees North, which are all in the same general area, listed in order of cheapeat to most expensive.
