Chinese in W. Hartford CT
I have been frequenting Szechuan Garden with a chinese born colleague of mine who orders off the chinese menu. THe food is great. If you order off the family style menu and ask for help you will be rewarded. Great authentic chinese style chinese food. Decor is not great but service is warm and friendly.
My same chinese colleague says that szechuan Tokoyo has better food and higher prices than the garden. I have not ordered off the "chinese" menu yet. I need to beg my manadarin speaking friend to bring me over there. Didn't you always wonder why so many chinese families are eating in a sushi/american chinese place... Now I know. Intelligence has it that szechuan garden tokyo/garden are owned by two sisters...
So please post your opinion if you have tried the authentic side of szechuan tokyo or garden.
Szechuan Garden and Tokyo are both in west hartford.
Chengdu and Butterfly are great american chinese choices in west hartford.
PS I live in Hartford and would welcome any Hartford Chinese recommendations.
Szechuan Garden is by far my favorite chinese in the greater Hartford area. It's the only place that comes close to measuring up to the places I frequest in Chicago and Boston. The staff while not overly firendly will be helpfull directing you thought the chinese menu if you ask and explain to them that you "have an american face but a chinese stomach." A few things I love there include:
Szechuan dumplings in red oil
Dry wok cooked chicken with chile
shreded pork with pressed tofu
Prawn in hot black bean
cold jellyfish salad
spicy beef tendon app
cold chonch with spicy sauce
Ma La fish
Most anything on the chinese menu is good and the do standard american chinese pretty well too, though that isn't why I went there when I lived in CT.
1) China Pan also lacks atmosphere but makes some pretty distinguished vegetarian Chinese dishes. They are located on New Britain Ave on the West Htfd/Newington/New Britain line in the TJ MAXX/BORDERS plaza.
2) Priya Indian on Rt. 99 in Rocky Hill has amazing Indian food, and has a rarely-found Indo-Chinese portion to their menu. Good choices there too.
Interesting! I posted a pretty bad review about Szcheuan Tokyo a few weeks ago. We had pretty bad service and there were items on their website that weren't on the menu. I think they gave us the "non adventerous" menu or something.
Anyway...while it's not exclusively Chinese, the food at East West Grille in West Hartford, New Park Avenue, is fantastic. BYOB.
I've long been a big fan of the "real" Chinese menu Szechuan Garden. Get the rice glutten. Amazing, very spicy, remarkable texture. I recall an excellent scallops and spinach dish, too. True the service and the atmosphere are lacking --it always seemed like they were cleaning up after a big night of festivities the night before, but then I realized that's how it is every time.
