I've lived in the Seacoast for a few years (teaching at UNH and living in Newmarket) and I've been delighted by the range of excellent beers made in northen New England.

I've found it difficult, however, to find places to buy many of the best local choices. I've found the widest selection at the Portland Public Market, but that is over an hours drive from here and at bit out of my usual grocery shopping range. I'm wondering if anyone knows of anything closer, say Portsmouth of Kittery area, that has a nice slection of local and Maine beers. I can always get a few Smuttynose, Magic Hats, and Shipyards at the local grocery stores such as Shaw's, Philbricks, etc., but I have a feeling that there must be a better place out there.

I'm looking, for instance, for selections such as Allagash White, varties of Casco Bay, Gritty's Black Fly, Lake Trout Stout, Geary's London Porter, Shipyard Munich Dark, Magic Hat Heat of Darkness, and the like.

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

I must have overlooked this post - sorry for late reply.

NH can be tough for specialty beer stores. Usually Shaw's has decent selections though.

In Portsmouth there is Gary's Beverage which is ok.

Tully's in Wells, ME has the best selection I've seen between MA and Portland - I think you can even get Cadillac Mtn. stout there now.

In portland, there is the public market which I check out everytime in Portland since they carry Poperinges Hommelbier that isn't distributed in MA. Also RSVP and Downeast Beverages(I believe they run the store in the mkt.) are good choices in Portland.

BTW, MH Heart of Darkness is no longer brewed. And you might be thinking of Harpoon Munich Dark, not Shipyard.
