The REAL best place to pick apples in the upper valley is Moore's Orchard. It's a little bit of a drive to North Pomfret, VT, but it's a real experience. No hay rides, or petting zoos, but a lot of fun. It is a pretty good sized orchard, and the kids can run around all over the place and i've never heard of any rules! . To top it all off, they've got a TON of different varieties, and homemade maple candies if the kids are good... they make the best! As for pumpkins, cedar circle is great, and they have a new cafe that is great for the adults! If you're real adventurous take the back roads from one to the other.

Around Hanover, the best place for apple picking is Poverty Lane Orchards in West Lebanon, NH, just off exit 17 of Route 89. In Thetford Vt, just off Route 5 (North from Norwich), is Cedar Circle farmstand where you can pick pumpkins in the field. Both places offer haywagon rides into the fields, although maybe not every weekend.
