I've got one dinner, two lunches and a breakfast worth of time in Portland and Freeport.

Deciding between Hugo's and Fore Street for dinner. Whats YOUR preference?

Suggestions for the other meals are kindly accepted!

Dinner: Fore St would be my preference
Lunch/Breakfast: Its hard to beat BECKY'S DINER and breakfast is served til 2pm.
But, most anyplace in the old port for lunch is very good.

It's almost impossible to compare the two. Fore Street serves large plates of wonderfully fresh and local seafood, meats and produce. Hugo's is much more inventive and a little precious at times. Part of the charm of Fore Street is the open kitchen and all the sights and smells that go along with that. Hugo's is somewhat more formal and definitely quieter. At Fore Street, you'll be blown away by the quality of everything you eat. At Hugo's, you'll be surprised and impressed by the presentations and combinations of unexpected flavors. It really depends on what you're in the mood for.

That should go down as a classic, definitive, Chowhound response.

Karl, I was thinking the same about Giorgio's post before I read your reply.

The Hugo's vs. Fore Street question comes up frequently, and Giorgio summed it up perfectly, and succinctly!

Now that dinner's sorted out, I strongly recommend the Flatbreach Pizza Co. for lunch. It's right next to the Ferry Bldg, has cute outdoor seating, and great flatbread pizzas baked in a free-form wood-burning stove. The place has a crunchy, Berkeley vibe, and we thought it was a great spot for lunch.

Also, check out Standard Bakery across the street for great breads, pastries and cookies.

If it's not too late -- I highly recommend Local 188 for brunch. Both inventive and affordable. Sat outside in the sun this morning and enjoyed a wild mushroom, spinach and goat cheese scramble with delicious homefries and lovely thick, chewy toast.
