Wine in Portland
Can anyone recommend good wine shops in the greater Portland area? I'm looking for something beyond the wine sections of Hannafords and Shaws. I haven't yet come across much in the way of good retailers. Is this a function of Maine ABC regulation? Am I stuck shopping while travelling to and from Boston, perhaps in a certain state in between?

I've alway's liked the Portland Green Grocer's wine selection.

I manage a wine shop in Rockland and, yes, Maine law is restrictive, but there are excellent wine shops outside the supermarkets in Portland. Try the Clown, RSVP, Downeast Provisions, and there's also one in the Portland Public Market (don't know the name).

The one in the market recently closed.

Actually, it has been incorporated into the beer and convenience store space. It was closed during the transition but is open now.

I like the Portland Greengrocer's wine selection, and Nick and John have always given me good recommendations.

I would second the recommendation for The Clown. They are extrememly knowledgeable and great to talk with. They can help you find or get what you're looking for.
Downeast beverage is also pretty good, Browne has a nice selection if prices don't matter to you. I like Freeport Cheese and Wine, although inventory was quite low when I was last there, perhaps lots of shopping tourists? Rosemont Bakery is a good bet for value wines, of course its a good bet all around!
I am curious about the Public Market wine shop, which is now integrated with the beer shop. It would be convenient. Anyone have any feedback?

When I was there 2 weeks ago the wine shop was not open yet.

We must be talking about two different places. Freeport Cheese and Wine is on Bow Street, down from JL Coombs.
Its a little off the beaten path.
