About 45-60 minutes south of Bangor, at the Waterville exit you'll find Governor's (there is also one in Bangor and one in Old Town)....great breakfast, lunch and dinner especially the desserts! Husband and I always like Pepino's (Mexican) in Bangor, it's on Stillwater Ave. near the mall.

How long since you've been to Governors? I've heard the place is on a downhill spiral (quality) and an uphill spiral (prices/value).

Anyone been there this year?

Re: Governors has been on the downhill for about 3-4 years. I will not go there because its dirty, all fried foods, and its thrown at you. They really lost it when they started to grow beyond the 2 restaurants, and now they are all over the place in Maine. Sorry, but I think people's eating habits have changed, and Governors is not the hot spot anymore, especially in the summer months when there are so many other places to choose from. I believe the father/mother retired, and the son has taken over.

Friars' Bakehouse
21 Central Street
Bangor, ME 04401
207-947-3770

Excellent bread baked daily; homemade soups, sandwiches, and cookies. It's a small place with family-style seating for about 20 people. On Fridays in the Summer they make a top-notch lobster roll but you have to either get there very early or reserve one. The name comes from the fact that it's run by two Friars.
