Need a good butcher near stamford

Spock's Brain Jun 12, 2005 02:21 PM

Recently moved to Springdale and I am in dire need of a quality butcher with prime cuts and a nice selection. I tried Stew Leonards meat counter the other night and was very dissapointed with their dry aged steaks.

This is a bit far for you to go, but Giovanni's Country Market off of upper Long Ridge Road (about 3 or 4 miles north of the Merritt) has a nice meat department and a real butcher staffing the counter all the time--not sure how much, if any, is prime, but they may be willing to special order for you if you will be a regular customer. And if you want to travel a bit further, Whole Foods in Greenwich (on Route 1) has a huge and gorgeous meat department--I haven't tried it, but it looks worth a shot. There's also a little deli/variety store on Long Ridge right off Merritt exit 34, next to the diner, that has a meat counter that looks decent. As you can guess, I'm not a big meat eater and am pretty satisfied by the supermarkets, but I do know Stamford, so if there's anything else you need, just email me. And welcome to town!

I shopped at Giovanni's on and off for years for convenience (lived nearby) and found their meat to be decent and expensive but not glorious--don't remember anything prime. And unfortunately they serve a great deal of attitude with their meat. If you're a regular known to the owners, you're greeted warmly; otherwise, it's hard to get someone at the meat counter to acknowledge you're standing there. Sorry I can't offer a better alternative, though.
