I love Scales! I have been about 3 times for lunch and I know everything on the menu must be great BUT the fried fish sandwich is my favorite and I love it so much that I can't not order it! I have had the fish chowder, the clam chowder and oysters as starters but I always get the sandwich. Last time, I had an Allagash White as my beverage with it - I think I had a religious experience!
The last time that I went to Portland for the weekend, I went to Hugo's for dinner one night (outstanding!) and then to see a show at the Merrill. The next morning - Coffee By Design for coffee and snack (bought some snickerdoodles for later - love them!), Miccucci's for some great Italian staples, and then wandered around the Public Market for a couple hours and then ended w/ lunch at Scales.
I think it was the perfect weekend in Portland!!

For a less touristy change of scenery, you could try Susan's Fish'n'Chips on Outer Forest Ave.

Susan's is a great idea for someone who is going to be in the area for a few days and is interested in sampling a variety of different seafood preparations. For someone with limited time who wants a memorable experience, right now its hard to beat Scales...

Concur with you on that, although I've been there a couple of times and came up with a few "skip it" items, unless the preparations have changed:

- Broiled fish sandwich, which was damp enough to demolish the bun and create a large pool of moisture on the plate.
- Onion rings, which were batter-dipped, a la Red's, to form a thick, bready coating, and not to my taste at all. This was soon after they opened, and I hope they've since changed this recipe.

Their fried seafood, however, is not to be faulted.
