cioppino in San Francisco or the East Bay

I'm looking for noteworthy cioppino in S.F. or Berkeley/Oakland area. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

    Place has been around for 140 years. GO. EAT.


    1. I'll second Jason's rec of Tadich. Best time to go is either late lunch, 2pm-ish, as there's an early line for lunch or for dinner when the Financial District is deserted. And, bring cash.

        If I might stick my two cents in - I wholeheartedly say amen to the Tadich and I recommend having the cioppino at the far end of the bar where they serve food. Somehow it tastes better there. They have a very lovely wine selection as well. Sitting at the bar you get a floor show as you can see into the kitchen and also the waiters will kibbitz with you.

          Ooooooh! I think I need to sneak in there for dinner soon.

          Also thought of another old timer - the Old Clam House down on Bayshore. I like those complimentary cups of steaming hot clam broth and the sourdough is late baked. Cioppino isn't as good though...
