After the Board's recs (thanks "J"), we went to Casa Christine in Federal Hill. Best meal we have had in ages! The chalk board had 16 entrees to choose from, as did the chalk board with appetizers. Not bad for a small place. We had an early 4 pm reservation and the place was quiet, but got crowded quickly. We came armed with our Chianti Classico and were seated, abruptly, by Christine. I don't know what all the fuss is about. This is a lady...up there in years...who runs a family owned business! I'm sure she's stressed! But she has a warm smile and friendly manner if you go the extra mile. We did not find her abrasive in the least.
After trying our fried calamari, which was raved about on the Boards, we decided we wanted veal. Although "diner fare" in most Italian restaurants, veal parmigiana can be a delight if cooked properly, and we had missed having it. So, we took a chance. Well, did it ever pay off! The most succulent, tender veal! Delicate as the calamari was. Not over-cheesed or over-sauced. And a very generous portion! We were served (and talked with) Christine's daughter-in-law, who, when I told her we learned of Casa Christine online, told me her daughter had read some of the things that were said about her Grandma and was quite upset. So, if anyone goes for the great food, lay off Christine! She's someone's grandma!
We passed on dessert to head for Pastiche, which Christine's daughter-in-law raved about as well. A piece of the decadent chocolate tort and a marcapone filled cake were the ultimate desserts.
Don't know when we'll get back to Providence, but Casa Christine will be on our list, definitely!!
Thanks to all, especially to you, "J."

Joanie -- the prices were very reasonable. I think the steak pizzaiola and the veal were the most expensive, at $19.95 each. The other entrees were much less. And the portion was huge! The appetizers were about $6.95 or so. Of course, the best savings was bringing our own wine. There was, however, a one-time $3.00 corkage fee, a small price to pay for such a great restaurant.

Shopgirl,
Glad you enjoyed Christine's, had you been there at 7:00 PM you would have seen Christine in her full glory. We know she is someone's Grandmother but there is no excuse for rudeness. We've been going for 15 years and suffice it to say, we have seen plenty. Back to the food, it is hard to beat. Also there is the ease of parking and reasonable prices. Plus you get to bring whatever you want to drink! If you go back to Pastiche, try their fresh fruit tart...soo good.

I am glad we did not see Christine in her "full glory." I don't think that would have sat very well with my husband. You are right...dinner is a time for relaxing, and one does not want to be stressed out by a crazy person! Thanks again for the rec. We will definitely return when in Providence!

She has been nicknamed this for years. It's part of the whole experience, though. If you are prepared for it, it can be a source of great amusement.

(Apologies to anone offended by using the term of something so horrific to describe something as mundane as this, but it IS a local term for the lady)

Ditto - Grandma should learn to treat customers w/a modicum of politeness. Good as the food is, I haven't been able to bring myself to return. Even worse though is Plaza Grille around the corner - something in the water maybe?
