We will be in Newport RI for New Year's and would like to find a find dining establishment that is NOT resorting to the New Year's Eve rip-off prix fixe scenario. Any suggestions?

Hi Larry....I just had a great Thanksgiving dinner a the White Horse Tavern. I ended up there, because I searched the board for what numerous hounds recommended as the best, then called each one to see what the THX offerings were...While the hounds may have great recs, I found you have to do the dirty work yourself to find out which places are open, and which may have secial menus for NYE, cuz no one really knows that, they just know that the food is good...What I did was culled la creme de la creme, and then called to do my research...good luck!

Well I think there are a few options for NYE that fit the fine dining label. But it all depends on what you mean by fine dining.

Bouchards, I think will do a regular menu. At least they have in the past.

White Horse, I have no idea but have heard they are doing good food right now.

La Petite, I would stay away from. Has consistently been some of the worst food ever.

Spiced Pear always does a pre fix and I dont think NYE will be any different. Always good but pre fix is not for everyone

Castle Hill will do a pre fix as well I believe. Good food. Not as good as some of the other places.

Candy Store, No idea what they will do.

Hope some of this helps

I'm very sad to hear about what seems to be the deterioration of food quality at Petite Auberge. It has been a favorite of ours for well over 20 years.Have the Putiers sold it???

Yes!!! I have a suggestion....we were in Newport last weekend for my husband's birthday and courtesy of this board and several recommendations, I took him to Tucker's Bistro and I highly recommend it! We had an excellent meal of beef carpaccio, filet mignon with a parmesan crust, served with beet risotto and an out of this world pumpkin creme brulee for dessert. Tucker, the owner is an outstanding and gracious host. A real treat to be around. We are used to the best restaurants in NYC...and we were pleasantly surprised and so happy with our choice. In my own opinion, I got the distinct impression that many restaurants in Newport are extremely overpriced (this is coming from an NYC girl) tourist spots, serving so-so food, however, Tucker's is not among them.

I seriously doubt you would be disappointed at Tuckers. It was excellent!!! And I can't wait for my return trip.

Jennifer:
Thanks for the advice. We actually booked dinner at Tucker's last night for NYE. All things considered, they are offering a very attractive deal:
$55 prix fixe for a very nice menu.

That's a great deal! I'm tempted to come back up there from Long Island for it....

Please post about your experience. We loved it. Great dinner and great host.
