Finding a place for lunch in Alameda, CA

Life takes us frequently to the west edge of Oakland,
to Balloon Excelsior to get supplies or repairs for our
hot air balloon. BE is on High Street, just across the
bridge from Alameda. Since Alameda has a nice beach on
the Bay, we often spend a little time there after a
trip to BE or to the Oakland Airport, also nearby.

Alameda has a really nice downtown, unique in the Bay
Area, and a good number of restaurants. Last time we
were there looking for lunch, we drove down Park (the
main drag) and then walked a bit to look in windows and
take in the smells--we always test a new spot by how it
smells.

We had a very nice sidwalk cafe lunch at Le Bistro,
1343 Park St. I had the mesquite chicken w/ pesto on
focaccia, Elise had a Mediterranean salad (greens,
Calamata olives, feta, dolmas, all with a yummy
dressing). With iced teas, tax & tip luch for 2 under
15 bucks, followed by browing in Silva's Used Books and
the gallery across the street, & then an hour on the
beach watching the blimp cruise over the Golden Gate
for the X-games.

There's a coffeehouse just down from Le Bistro that we
plan to visit next time--again, the smell test: it
smelled exactly like a coffee house should.
