San Leandro, CA

San Leandro is hardly the place I'd look if I were
looking to find a bite in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Even so, I found some good chow here. After a morning
at the hot air balloon repair shop in Oakland (a whole
'nother story), we decided to go to lunch with Brent &
Christine & they took us to Cafe Encore, at MacArthur &
Dutton, just off I-580, in SL. It's an unpretentious
place, a storefront in an old, faded commercial strip,
sparsely decorated with a few hanging bunches of dried
chiles & garlic braids. Where it scored was twofold:
a good, solid meal, and service. I had fettucine
Alfredo, nicely done with fresh mushrooms, not too
heavy. Brent & Christine had been 4 or 5 times
before--the waitress recognized them, brought Brent his
water with lemon on the side, and a couple of other
touches that said "we remember who you are and how you
like your meal." Well done.
