We did the exact same drive last month. Based on our research on this board, we chose Simon Pearce, in Quechee, as our pitstop, and were so glad we did, we stopped there on the way back, too. To get there, take the Route 4 exit off of 89 (my recollection is that it's the first exit once you cross into Vermont), and follow Route 4 west into Quechee, then look for the signs. For dinner, you probably want to call ahead and make a reservation. I suggest you do a search on this board to read all of the wonderful things that have been written about the place.

You'll definitely need a reservation at Simon Pierce, and you'll be so glad you did. The directions above are fine. It's in the center of town right beside the covered bridge. Have wonderful meal and report back.

There are a couple of excellent diners off I89 at Exit 1, just before you reach Queechee Gorge. Sorry I don't remember the names. One is "Someone's? Family Diner". It is in a small strip mall type building. They have collections of both old radios and lunchboxes to get your memories flowing while you're eating. I had an excellent burger and REAL fries, which are harder and harder to find. Nothing fancy, just good quick food. Hope this is helpful even without the name, you can't miss it when you're on that road. If you cross the bridge over the gorge, you've gone too far.
