Have been going to a place right off of RTE 91 (Putney exit) for a couple of years simply called Curtis' which a friend of mine from nearby Brattleboro introduced me to. Its a BBQ shack run out of a decommissioned 60s era bus ; halved oil drums with whole hog sides roasting for hours. I think it ranks as some of the best bbq I have ever had. I have been there about 6 times over the past 3 years and its quality never seems to waiver and Curtis himself, a transplanted Southerner, is always manning the roasting drums. Because it's outdoor seating only, it closes for the season in mid-November, but opens up again in April (I think). Has anyone else tried it?

I've driven by it, and heard it's good from others, but haven't made it there yet.
It got a nice, short write-up at roadfood, and looks like the type of joint that there ought to be a whole lot more of.

I've been to Curtis' frequently over the years while driving betw. NY and central VT. Prefer the ribs to the chicken (which is good, just not as good as the ribs). Last time I was there his wife and children were working the registers. I love the fact that it's directly across the road from the Putney Co-op, a quintessential VT healthfood store, which has good sandwiches and coffee, and VT products like cheese (Grafton Cheddar!) and maple syrup. A good (if healthy) wintertime alternative to Curtis' pig feast!
