If you're in the mood for pancakes and don't mind a bit of a drive-- and a scenic one at that, head over to Polly's Pancake Parlor in Sugar Hill, NH, not too far from Franconia Notch. There's even a website at www.pollyspancakeparlor.com.

We took a road trip around New England in early September and spent two nights in NH. Jane and Michael Stern's review in their Roadfood Goodfood book and at Roadfood.com had us salivating and anticipating a great pancake meal at Polly's and we thoroughly enjoyed our experience there-- great service, great view, delicious pancakes and maple products-- maple syrup, maple cream, and maple sugar, all available on each table to enhance the perfect pancakes!

The batters include regular (white flour), whole wheat, buckwheat, cornmeal, and oatmeal. The fillings are coconut, blueberries or walnuts. We ordered "The Sampler" and requested two each of three inch pancakes: buckwheat with coconut, oatmeal with walnuts, and cornmeal with blueberries, served with corn-cob smoked bacon. The waitress cooks your pancakes to order and brings three to start-- one of each kind. When you are finished, she brings the next three, hot and delicious off the griddle.

The hours are 7:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M., and we fortunately made it by 1:35 (my tour books said they were open until 7:00 P.M.) so we felt fortunate to have made it in time to enjoy a memorable meal.

I was just thinking of this. I just got back for there. Most of the places are crowded tourist pubs. The Margharita Grill(excuse my spelling) was highly recommended even by this site, but was about an hour and a half wait. Then I stumbled on a place that I had been to almost thirty years ago, and went back. The Lobster Trap on the backroad (West Side Rd) in North Conway. This is a Maine type old lobster place with simple dishes but good quality and full of locals. I'm glad I went back.

Any list of fine dining places in that area has to include the Inn at Thorne Hill in Jackson. Not cheap, but (imho) very good. We've also had some good meals at the Wentworth in Jackson--a beautiful old hotel.

If you're looking for a great warmup on a chilly night, the Black Bear Pub at the Bernerhof Inn on route 302 in Bartlett has a lovely fondue for two.

For breakfast, don't miss Gunther's Restaurant in North Conway. It's on Main St. on the second floor, over a store. It's down home funky - plates, tables, and chairs don't match, but who even cares when the food's so good. They have an extensive menu and will make just about anything you requestif they have it in the kitchen.
