Info on our Portland visit (and Thanks!)

First I want to thank everyone who gave us recommendations before our visit. Portland is a wonderful city and since we had been supposed to fly out on Wednesday and couldn't leave until Sunday - we had a few extra days to eat.
I also want to thank everyone in Portland who helped us out while we were there for 4 extra days before we could fly home yesterday - from the B&B owner who put us in a suite when we had to stay for an extra few days, to the waitress at Street & Co who offered her home if we needed a place to stay when she found out we were so far from home on Sept. 11, to the Maine School of Arts kids who set up a peace flag display outside their school and invited the public to make their own signs - it was a nice place to be in the past few traumatic days.
And on an eating note - we ate really well!
Dinner at the Blue Mango Cafe on Spring Street - this was recommended to us by a neighborhood regular as we took a break from carrying our bags to our B&B - I had a jerk banana fish entree with black beans and rice that was superb.
We tried to have lunch at The Porthole Restaurant but they were out of both lobster and clams and we decided we hadn't come all the way from California for a club sandwich. We ended up at Boone's next door - nothing to write home about but certainly not bad.
We had dinner at Fore Street that was just superb. Had the summer tasting platter with smoked seafood, fresh tomatoes and carrots and beans, olives, mushrooms, MMM!
Entrees were grilled Elk and a pasta with crimini mushrooms and maytag blue cheese - so rich and delicious. Dessert was a glass of Blacksmith, Roughshod Maine Blueberry wine with grape brandy - really hit the spot (can't wait to find out if I can get Maine wine shipped to Calif!)
We also tried Gilbert's Clam Shack in the Old Port area and had some very good thick clam chowder and the Most Delicious french fries.
Dinner at Street & Co. was kind of a disappointment after Fore Street - just not as a great a meal - but our waitress was so sweet - this was Tuesday nite, so I'm sure the day's events could have clouded our culinary judgement (it was our anniversary so we decided not to postpone dinner out that nite).
Since we were still there on Thursday we tried Local 188 and had some great food - a great yellow pea and potato soup, mesclun salad with goat cheese, tortilla, and a wonderful small banana cream black bottom pie (it was more of an individual tart size rather than a slice of pie and oh my it was good).
and last but not least - on a drive down the coast we stopped at Botiglios Deli on RT1 in Saco, ME for lunch and had a great capicola and cheese sandwich and a baked cod special that was just fabulous - their sign said homemade soup so we figured we had to try the place and it's definately worth it when you tire of lobster rolls and want some nice Italian deli type food.
Looking forward to another visit to Portland to try all those other places!
