Many years ago I remember seeing an ice cream shop selling Lobster and Butter flavored ice cream, I couldn't even imagine... now I am sorry I didn't try it. I have heard that it is a buttery vanilla ice cream with real chunks of lobster meat... has anyone heard of it... tried it... is there anywhere to get it without going all the way to Bar Harbor?

This is available at Ben & Bill's Ice Cream Emporium. They also have a store in Falmouth on the Cape and in Northampton, MA, but I'm not sure if that one has the lobster ice cream.

My 9 year old daughter and I were at that very ice cream shop last June and spied said ice cream. We are both die hard ice cream, lobster AND butter lovers, but neither of us could bring ourselves to try the ice cream. It seemed nauseating at the time.

I tried it at that same ice cream store in Bar Harbor. It's not as bad as it sounds -- definitely edible -- but I wouldn't choose it again. Basically, it's an unhappy marriage between something sweet with something that should never be anything but salty (lobster IS from the sea, after all). It might have been more successful if they had made it a savory, appetizer-type ice cream, but instead they went the dessert route.

OK, that takes the cake. I will have to try that this summer. Sounds as interesting as the fantastic garlic ice cream I had at the Garlic festival in saugerties last fall. (And the incredible garlic vanilla fudge, the best fudge or candy I ever had!)

Skip the lobsta ice cream at Ben & Bill's -- it's strictly a barker at a carnival show. Instead, go to the back of the store and try some of their fruit jells, particularly the dark-chocolate covered raspberry variety, though I'm also fond of the uncoated ginger.
