Lunch En Route From Brooklyn, CT to Brooklyn, NY

  • n

I need some recommendations for a place to stop for a casual lunch on Saturday. We will be taking I-95 to the Merritt Pkwy then down to Brooklyn. (It all depends on what the traffic is like on the bridges as to which way we will take into Brooklyn.) No pizza though.

I did a quick check on mapquest and it seems you will be driving through the Bronx (on highways of course). Depending on your timing, it's worth a slight detour to check out the Arthur Avenue Italian section. You could do lunch at Roberto's (see the outer boroughs board for recent reviews) and some shopping at the Arthur Avenue Market and the surrounding bakeries & delis (most non-restaurant stuff closes around 5-6PM on Sat). For directions, use this address: 2344 Arthur Avenue, which is the address of Mike's Deli in the Market. There's a municipal parking lot right across the street.

Thanks. I looked at my road atlas and kinda know where Arthur Avenue is...I will make sure I have the directions before we leave. We are going down and coming back in the same day so I don't think there will be too much lingering time. We are moving. Thanks for all your help. I will let you know the results of the trip. :)

Please let us know. I travel this route every couple of weeks and can't stand the roadside choices. I always end up at McDonalds! I never wanted to stray enough to find something due to the trade-off in time - esp b/c these are always rushed trips. If you find anything not to far off the highway, it would be great to know - esp any good diners!

Okay, here are a couple of places we have been to in CT off of I-95. (Easy to get to.) The Cuckoo's Nest, 1712 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook, CT 860-399-8189. They serve Mexican food totally totally not like Taco Bell. Large portions and I think really good.

Also, we have been to Sanhsia a sushi bar on 2279 Boston Post Road, Guilford, CT 203-453-2988. Really good sushi and sashimi. I have their menu here if you have any questions. The last time I was there, they served free tea and it was soooo soothing and delicious.

One restaurant we tried to get into but was closed is Alforno Ristorante, 1654 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook, CT 860-399-4166. I have heard good things about it. It is in a strip mall and The Cuckoo's Nest is right down the road from them. Let me know if you stop.

I forgot to mention a diner in my area. I don't know if you go up to MA via 395 but off of Exit 93 is Zip's Diner. All the locals hang out there. I am not a diner person but it is very popular.
