Erbaluce would be my choice. Its relatively new, creative and delicous and the room is intimate.

For the South End, I'd go for the bar area at Petit Robert Bistro. (The dining room is a lot louder).

In Cambridge, it's a bit pricier, but I love Ten Tables Cambridge. Definitely quiet and romantic and the food is excellent.

I'd second both the Petit Robert Bistro (in the South End) and Ten Tables (Cambridge), although I've never found the PRB dining room to be loud. My other favorite romantic spots include Erbaluce, No. 9 Park or L'Espalier, although the last two are a bit pricier.

Of course, given that the OP posted over three years ago, I suspect it's a little late for new suggestions.

Ha! I didn't realize. I'll blame ineemeeny for the more current response :-p

Hahaha, oops! I'll take the heat. But I'm new here. Just getting the hang of things. :)

            Mistral, but don't forget reservations.

And another favorite of mine, is to drive up to the North End, right up the cobblestones to Mamma Maria's, to the valet in front of the restaurant. And yes, you need reservations here to. Have fun.
