There are several places that make them well, but the problem seems to be consistency. Every place I've had them has had good and bad days, sometimes the dumplings being perfect sometimes wrought with problems. I have not yet found a place that makes them great every time. Still, the abovementioned places will all have ones worth the gamble. Since they are a Shanghainese specialty you'd expect a Shanghai place to do them well, and I like the ones st Shanghai Gate.

re: barleywino
I've had the soup dumplings more times than I can count at Jo Jo Taipei and agree wholeheartedly with StriperGuy. Have had it once at Shanghai Gate and it was fine, but not too memorable. Have also had it many times at Shangri-La in Belmont -- I'd put them second behind Jo Jo.
The best soup dumplings I have so far in the U.S. was at a place in Cupertino, CA -- Jo Jo's is not quite to that sublime level, but definitely the best in Boston, IMHO.

re: barleywino
I have recently had the soup dumplings at Gourmet Dumpling House and at JoJo Taipei and must say that I preferred those at GDH. At JoJo they were sort of limp, several had opened up, and I didn't find the filling as complex as at GDH (though that could be because at JJ they were pork and liver (I think) but crab and pork at GDH). Still, both were very good and I am sure it was just an off night at JoJo.

Gourmet Seafood has a pork and crab version that's probably the best in the area (if you like crab), great crab flavour in the broth, suitably thin skins.
The ones at Shanghai Gate might only be available during the weekends (not 100% sure, do check), but it's a very good textbook example. Pork only. The ones at Wing's are roughly the same in quality, but haven't had them in a while.›1 Reply -
Oooooohhh, I miss soup dumplings! We made weekly pilgramages to Joe's Shanghai for them when we lived in the evil apple. I'd love to know where to get them around here!
