I am writing an essay on white asparagus and must find some (fresh) by this coming Tuesday. I can travel anywhere public transportation can get me.

Thanks!

(Also, does anyone know any restaurant that are serving any dishes withwhite asparagus in it currently? I know it's out of season...)

YOu'd more typically find it in jarred form this time of year, especially at markets targeting central European customers (call Karl's Sausage Kitchen in Saugus, for example) and online.

Russo's would be a good bet, but how easy is it to get there by public transportation?

It might take getting a bus to downtown Watertown and walking, but I think if anyone would have them this time of year it would be Russo's.

Market Basket in Union Sq. (Somerville Ave.) had fresh white asparagus last Saturday.

Union Sq. is a 15-20min. walk from Harvard or Porter T, or you can take these buses: 85 from Kendall, 91 from Central, 86 from Harvard, 87 from Porter, Davis, or Lechmere (87 stops right out front of the MB).

Can I ask what's the nature of the essay? I only ask because It's probably my most hated food in the world. I love asparagus but when I went to Prague I was force fed the white stuff like there was no tomorrow... anyway I'd be interested in seeing what an essay about white aparagus entails

I think it's a liminal experience kind of thing, culturally induced. White asparagus can be a pain to prepare (the peeling process is not always as straitforward as it seems*) and I can't say I found the effort worthwhile.

But I do prefer fat green asparagus spears to skinny pencils.

* for folks who've never prepped white asparagus: unlike green, you must peel white asparagus, because it has a much tougher outside layer.
