The article in the Boston Globe about the limited market for Maine shrimp makes me so sad. What an amazing local resource for us all during this time of year when having local lobster isn't the right thing to do and the supply of local produce is practically non-existent! So get out there and buy some Maine shrimp to cook at home. Or ask for it at your favorite restaurant.

So far we've been buying our Maine shrimp at Whole Foods - all the locations we frequent seem to have it. So far this season we've prepared it as shrimp dip, peel and eat, and just last Friday as taco filing with serrano, cilantro, tomato and plenty of lime. It also makes a wonderful ceviche.

Let's all see if we can help. To me fresh Maine shrimp season is one that I look forward to every year. I have been trying to do my part, but my wife and I don't consume enough to make a difference. All of the chefs who check in here should take note of this and try to include specials using Maine shrimp.

For the consumers, who are fans, we should all ask our favorite restaurants to use these delicious little creatures for a special. Take advantage of an underutilized gem.

Anyone who doesn't know about these sweet little shrimp should check them out. They are easy to prepare and really delicious. I usually buy the headless ones with the shell on at Whole Foods and cook them with a spice mix (Penzey's shrimp and crab boil). Boil 2 quarts of water with a couple of tablesoons of the boil mix for 10 minutes or so then add the shrimp and return to the boil and they are done. They are delicious with a little lemon butter or remoulade or whatever.

I read the same article and I was blown away at the mark up. It sounds like they sell shrimp $.10 a pound if you buy 10 pounds. I pay way more than that at Shaw's at the Pru. How do they make any money?

Any other place we can get Maine shrimp in the Boston area besides Whole Foods which isn't really convenient to me? :-P
Or anyone know of any restaurants serving dishes with them? The only mention I've seen this year has been at an Italian restaurant in the North End...

Toro in the South End had an escabeche of Maine shrimp a couple of weeks ago that was delicious, but a little slimy for my wife's taste. I loved it.

I had some in December from Whole Foods and they were great. I made a stir fry with bok choy and noodles but I think these are also the shrimp that make great sweet "ama ebi" sushi. Broiled shell-on with olive oil, lemon juice, and cilantro might also be good....

A sad situation. But one thing about your post I didn't understand: "at this time of year when having local lobster isn't the right thing to do" ?

What's wrong with having lobster at this time of year?

The quality of lobster deteriorates from mid-January through March. Most of the fleet doesn't fish during these months, so the lobster you eat comes out of the pounds. The lobster in the pounds typically doesn't get enough to eat. They fight each other and will even eat the antenee of other lobster. If you look at lobster that has been in the pounds too long, you'll notice that their antenee are mostly broken stubs. There are several well respected chefs, including Sam Hayward of Fore Street Grill in Portland, Maine, who will not put lobster on their menus this time of year due to these reasons.

I was up in Portland this past weekend. Tried some of the Maine shrimp risotto at five fifty-five, taking the place of the lobster risotto. It was a bit too cheesy (marscapone) and rich for one person in my party to handle entirely. But the shrimps were succulent and I was more than willing to help out.

sidenote: the salmon with wild rice and cauliflower gratin was fantastic.
