It's a popular cocktail among the coastal crowd, especially the sailing community.
Dark rum (usually Goslings or Myers) + ginger beer over ice.

I've gotten Ginger Beer at most grocery and liquor stores in the area, it's not as tough as it once was to find it. Shaw's and Trader Joe's definitely carry some.

A dark and stormy is Glosing's Rum and ginger beer, on the rocks, served with a wedge of lime. It was the drink of our wedding!

And to answer the original question - you can get decent ginger beer at Trader Joe's. They carry several brands.

One of the least informative responses on Chowhound to follow:

My mom found a recipe for Ginger Beer and she does a great job when she makes it. I don't think it's difficult but it does have to sit for a while. I don't really watch when she makes it but I'm sure recipes are online.

When I eat Jamaica food, nothing works as well than a Ginger Beer. I love it.

The supermarket brands don't seem to grab me like the bottles I buy in the small mom & pop Jamaican restaurants and bakeries.

Whole Foods carries ginger beer by the Ginger People. I find it to be much more ginger-y than Reed's. It's $4.99/4 pk.
I've never seen it in Metro Boston, but Blenheim's from SC is my gold standard for ginger beer.

Chez Henri will usually make a pretty good rendition.

I've seen Cock 'n Bull brand around (wine cellar of silene possibly?) but I don't remember exactly where.

It's worth noting that reeds has two strengths of ginger beer, premium v. extra I think. Both are pretty good, but only the extra has a bite to it.

Have also found ginger beer by shipyard called captain eli's but haven't tried it yet. I've gotten great dark and stormys in the North end at Lucca and can't recreate them. I will have to ask what they use.

I was at Stop and Shop in Watertown the other day and picked up two different Ginger Beers by DB. One, I think called Original Jamaican Style, is in a brown bottle, and if you look at the cap it is bottled in NY. It contains corn syrup, and while the flavor is OK, it didn't wow me. It was also pretty flat, maybe it was old. The other DG was in a green bottle, and was bottled in Canada. It used sugar as opposed to corn syrup, and was a little smoother and fresher tasting, but also somewhat flat. I think both batches may have suffered from age. I used to buy Old Tyme Jamaican Ginger Beer, but haven't seen it in a while. I was not impressed by the brand TJs sells.
