I have been charged with the task of picking up some essential items to bring home to the boonies for the High Holidays this year. In the Boston Metro area, where would I go to buy the best sliced tongue, whitefish salad, taglach, deli mustard and rye bread? Thanks!

You might want to head down to Harvard Street in Brookline. There you will find (on the same block, more or less):
--The Butcherie, which is a great local market with all kinds of kosher food including deli meat, kugel, blintzes, kasha, etc.
--Kupel's, which has excellent bagels, pastries, breads, etc.

Both are about 3 or 4 blocks from Barnes and Noble, heading toward Allston...

Not a whole lot of other options that I can think of. Maxie's in Stoughton has good deli meat, potato pancakes, and blintzes, and I heard there is a great deli in Waban, but don't know much about the place. Anyone else know?

Kosher options are limited around here. I don't really care for Kupel's anymore but haven't tried the rye at my preferred Kosher bakery, Cheryl Ann's.

For whitefish salad I'd be tempted to get a whole whitefish at the Butcherie or (not Kosher) the Bazaar market on Beacon Street and make my own.

If you are able to drive a little farther, I like Hurwitz's Kosher Market on Rt. 126 in Framingham- not too far from downtown Framingham. In the past, I've purchased CherylAnn's challah there, and they have a combination of prepared foods, meats, etc. It's pretty small, so you may want to call and see what they have available. Good luck.

Cheryl Ann's does not sell anything besides baked goods.
I have never been to the Bucherie but I have tried lots of foods from there and have liked them...haven't tried their whitefish though. But as charlieg says, if you want to make just one stop, head to the Bucherie.

But if you have a car and can hop over to Cheryl Ann's, it's worth getting your baked goods there.

I can't agree that Kupel's bagels are "excellent" -- mediocre would be my assessment. I have slightly fonder recollections of their other baked goods, but just slightly.

But re the OP's query, I'm pretty sure there's a kosher deli on Comm. Ave in Newton Centre, right near Centre St. (not Barry's) I've never been, so I can't comment on quality or selection, but I'm fairly sure that they are kosher -- maybe others know more? Good luck with your quest.

Offering it more as a suggestion for someone else to comment on than a recommendation, since only been there once or twice and don't care for things like white fish, but if it's got to be kosher, what about Ruben's Deli on Harvard Ave in Brookline (right on the line)? I know you can get bulk quantities on some stuff at the deli counter vs it all being eat in. Maybe someone else more familiar with it can give it a thumbs up or down...
