I am looking on some info on the Sunset Grill and Tap. I will be in town with my wife and five year old next week and would like to try this place but I am not sure if it is a kid friendly place for a mid after(2-3pmish) meal. I am huge beer nut and an avid Beeradvocate.com reader and have read many a review on this establishment with its extensive tap and bottle list. I also see that they have some satellite places as well, if one of these is a more kid/family place and still has an impressive beer offering please let me know. I have linked the not so great homepage below.

Thanks,
Mike

Sunset is pretty noisy and busy and I think it would be just fine with kids. There's also enough to choose from that even if you've got a picky kid, you should be able to find something to eat.

I find the college-kids vaguely-sports-bar-like vibe at Sunset to be a bit off-putting... it feels like a TGIFriday's with lots of taps... but there's definitely plenty of things on the menu that kids would like. If you can get to Redbones (in Davis Square, Somerville) or the Publick House (in Brighton, on the C Green line), those are both highly recommended beer joints in Boston.

.and while you're in town, be sure to visit Charles Street Liquor! It's right on Charles Street (duh), which is easily accessible via the T (take the Red Line to the Charles/MGH stop, and just walk less than a block down Charles, it's on the left. The most impressive beer selection in town.

I am a big fan of Sunset. Their blueberry beer is my absolute favorite!! It goes perfectly with their DELICIOUS turkey burgers. I would also recommend their chicken chili nachos and they have a lettuce wrap appetizer that I sometimes get as my meal. So good! Have fun!

As a beer fan myself, I avoid Sunset. Too many beers sitting around and past their prime.

Two places that would be ok to bring a kid to in the afternoon would be Redbones or Bukowski's - Inman Square.

Both would be some what mellow at that time of the day.

Cheers.

I used to think the same thing, but lately, they have been more dedicated to keep beer fresh. Not only that, the bartenders are alot more knowledgeable than they used to be - so they know what has just been put on tap and what has been sitting around awhile.

I would suggest before you order your beer from the table, to take a trip up to the bar and ask the bartender what's fresh in the styles you like.

The new renovations at the back bar are great. Its much less claustrophobic and there are more bar seats now.

I have been 4 or 5 times this summer and have only gotten one dud. A couple of years ago it was almost every beer.

Can't beat the prices at Sunset (well, excluding the Linwood) and you avoid the staff attitudes you get at Buks or The Public House.

Definitely go for it. Despite the post below, I have never had a beer "past it's prime" at the Sunset, and I have literally had hundreds of beers there. The food menu is reasonbly diverse and of quite good quality, with sizable portions. It won't be too busy late afternoon, and you'll be fine with the kids.

I should add... I have been going there for 16 years, since it was a tiny hole-in-the-wall. It's expanded 3 or 4 times since I started going.

I agree. The menu will definitely have things for the kids and the atmosphere is perfect for them in the afternoon.

I've also seen a lot of posts here saying the beer is not fresh. Maybe I've just been lucky, or maybe I tend to drink from the more popular taps, but I have never been served a stale or flat beer. I did have a warm bottle once, but that seemed out of place.

Since I recently discovered the Publik House in Brookline however, I've been trying to explore their taps.

I think it is a great choice. My only BUT would be not to hang out there once the college kids show up (it is in the middle of a huge college drinking area). But your 5 year old will be fine and the food is better than average bar chow.

Enjoy.

i always laugh about the 1st time i was in there in college- it was a bright day and i came into the dim room so was temporarily blinded- didnt see the millions of beer bottles everywhere- the waitress asked me what i wanted and i said "oh, i don't know, whatever is on tap." she literally shook her head in disgust and walked away.
