Ethnic Grocers (Gusos? Goal?) Close to Harvard/Inman

Hi I just moved to Cambridge and the sadest part about moving is losing my favorite places to shop.

Someone recommeded 'Goal' (a brazilian supermarket between Union and Porter) and 'Gusos' (an international place with good produce in Watertown). I can't find either of these places in the phone book or online. Can anyone help with these or other recommendations.

I have found some amazing shops in Watertown's little Armenia. Those are the kind of places I am looking for. I am open to products from anywhere- mainly looking for interesting, inexpensive ingredients. Produce is a plus.

Thanks!

    1. I just did numerous google searches (I even tried searching in Portuguese) for Gol Supermarket and I couldn't find it either. Strange. Maybe we have the name wrong. Anyway, it's definitely there, on Somerville Av, just a 1-2 blocks east of Beacon St. in Somerville. So if you are walking or driving on Somerville Av. from Porter Sq, it's on your right as you go toward Union Sq. It's definitely worth a visit.

In Watertown, if you haven't been already, try Sevan Bakery (armenian).

In East Somerville/Union Sq. area there are lot of Central American and Brazilian places....lots of little stores. Two good Central American markets to try are:

      La Internacional
318/322 Somerville Ave. (near Union Sq)
      617-776-8855

      Los Amigos
86 Broadway (East Somerville, between McGrath and Sullivan Sq.)
      617-776-6009

Finally, you might want to visit Market Basket, also on Somerville Av, they have lots of ethnic ingredients, produce can be awesome but sometimes isn't super fresh.

Hopefully others can give you more info on Asian, European, African and Caribbean shops, since in cambridge you can find those too....good luck.

I just drove by Gol last night on my way from Reliable Market at Union to Kotobukiya at Porter Exchange - it's there all right. Reliable & Kotobukiya are great for Korean and Japanese foods.

I second Reliable Market. LOTS of Asian products, mostly Korean. Go on a Saturday so you can shop the farmers market, too.

            2. "Gusos"... long shot, but you're not thinking of Russo's, are you? It's not an ethnic grocery, but they do have an excellent selection of produce.

                1. At the corner of Hampshire and Columbia Sts in Cambridge is a great little latin/caribbean market. I think the owners are Puerto Rican, but I'm not sure. It's a great place to stop if you just need one or two ingredients - like a seasoning and some batata. Lots of different saltfish, cured meat, even Bedroom Bully and other roots tonic.

Spend some time at Market Basket - they really have everything. Tripe, calf brains, beef shin - many south/central american and brazilian products. Good fresh herbs (they sell out early on the weekends) even fresh aloe.
