I like mornings in E. Cambridge. Deliveries at Fernandes Fish Market, the bustle at the hardware store and day laborers outside of Casal hoping to pick up a bit of work.

The bakery is a great stop on the way home from an early bike ride. I LOVE their cappuccinos - not traditional, but like a beverage comfort food: creamy and rich. Certainly made with whole milk, and perhaps (I fear) even with half and half?? I really should pay attention one of these times. Sugar? Ask for just one or none, otherwise your teeth may later fall out of your head. Cinammon and cocoa? Sure!

Just an FYI: Lupitas (Somerville) got a Best of Boston award and it was very BUSY last night - a good 15 people or so when we were there at 9:15. Interesting that they had notes of congratulations from the staff at Via Matta and Radius. Tacos and quesadilla were as good as ever.

I've never been inside Casal Bakery, mainly because the strip of cambridge street between columbia st & elm st stinks every single time I pass it. I'm not saying this is the bakery but something is producing a never-ending wiff of raw sewage and it does not help the appetite.

Maybe I'll get something to go in the future.

I *loooove* Casal. Although I drive past it every morning on the way to the expressways, to get to work, I am always in a damn hurry, otherwise I'd get one of their big, rich iced coffees and a couple pao de quejo, or one of their chicken empanadas. Mmmmmmmmm. Their iced coffee puts Dunkin Donuts "Turbo Ice" whatever to shame.

Thanks for the news about Lupita's 2005 Best of Boston award. I went on Boston Magazine's web site and found the info. Here it is:

BURRITO, 2005
Tacos Lupita
13 Elm Street , Somerville MA 617-666-0677
Many local burritos suffer from soggy tortillas, poor cheese distribution, and subpar meats and vegetables. But Tacos Lupita near Porter Square serves its burritos literally bursting with lemon-marinated steak, pinto beans, and pico de gallo. A steal at less than $5. 13 Elm St., Somerville, 617-666-0677.(See our Dining Guide for More Information)

Casal's bread pudding may be one of the better breakfast deals around. For $1, you get a huge slice of their homemade bread pudding. Firm enough that you can carry it and a nice cinnamon flavor.

Beats donuts anyday
