I am going to find myself out in Ashland tonight, an area of Massachusetts I have never really explored. Can anybody recommend a restaurant for dinner that is not on the congested Rt.9 stretch in Framingham? Thanks.

I was driving through Ashland in the spring and stopped at an Inn on Main St. A bit of searching online and I think it must have been the John Stones Inn. Nice outdoor patio. Nothing fancy - British pub fare, but what we had was well-prepared. Imaginative & tasty sandwiches.

I think Ashland might be the location of the Indian place Chennai Woodlands that's mentioned on the New England board from time to time. I've never been.

Stone's Public House. Definitely where you should go in Ashland. The chef-owner is Matt Murphy, formerly of Matt Murphy's in Brookline. Convivial atmosphere and great food, both of the bar and more upscale variety.

Chennai Woodlands has very good Indian food. It isn't your typical Indian restaurant - mostly vegetarian and many south Indian choices. I think the food tastes better than Masala near Burlington or Udupi Cafe in Framingham.

The atmosphere is very casual and everytime I have gone...full of Indians.

Thank you so much for this thread! I would never have found out that Matt Murphy has a place in Ashland otherwise. (I wonder why he moved all that way? Maybe he missed the countryside?)

Anyway, just wanted to reiterate the recommendation for Chennai Woodlands. We're going back this weekend for more.
