Speeeed's! "Since 1975"
I collected some friends from work and finally made the pilgrimage to Speed's today. Both Speed himself and his apprentice/heir were at work today. We had a nice chat with both of them (there was no line), and we all ordered ours with everything.
Phwoah! We four agreed that these were the best hot dogs we'd ever had in our lives. Plenty of love and craft go into their making, and an eye-popping array of mostly homemade condiments (Words to another patron: "It's not ketchup, it's our own sauce, but if you like ketchup, you'll like this.") It's really an experience, even eaten standing around in the dust and diesel fumes of Newmarket. The dog itself is massive, by the way.
I know I'll be going back soon. They promised to add Tuesdays very soon to the current Wednesday to Friday schedule (11am to 2 or 3pm in good weather), and add Mondays after Memorial Day.
Dang it, stop it Boston 'hounds! You are tortuing me with all these posts about Speed's dogs. If you keep it up, I am going to have to get up off my not insubstantial butt and shlep out to Bean Town from the sticks, way across the country over here, and snatch up some speed dogs and hurry over to Fenway before the dogs get cold.
Think of it, legendary dogs and the World Series Champions!

You're making me feel soo guilty (you of "Riding the Rails" - one of the top CH stories ever!). I've only been 10-12 times looking for Speed's and he's not been there, but I LIVE HERE. You've put in perspective. Only 10 times?!! I can't give up.

I couldn't take the torture, I broke down and defrosted a package of Hebrew National Dinner Franks. Threw them under the broiler and got out a bottle of KC Masterpiece Spicy BBQ sauce. Scarfed the whole mess down, but somehow, I don't think my experience tonight approaches the doggie nirvana that the Speed experience sounds like.
You owe it to me and to yourself to track down Speed.

Speed told us a few years ago how he makes these blessed hot dogs. First of all, you have to steam the dogs (or are they boiled... my memory's not all that good..) Then you put them on the charcoal. Cook 'em slow. Toast the buns. Yeah, you have to have those special sauces (Speed'll never let that secret out... but there IS barbeque something in there).
Believe me, we bought a pkg of those dogs from him once before, but no matter how we cooked them, it just wasn't the same.

Don't want to drive you crazy... but.... I HAD A SPEED'S DOG TODAY!!!!

We were driving thru Newmarket Square (boyfriend used to live in the area) to get some fish at Cram's Seafood. We turned took that turn around the Victorian Diner... could it be??? Is it.... YES!!! Speed's cart is there! YIPPEEEEEE!!!!!
Well, it's been about three years (we lived in AZ for 2 1/2 yrs - man, it's so good to be back!!) since I sank my teeth into one of those babies, and believe me, it's every good as I remember.
Tucson never had ANYTHING like this!!!
Man, it's GOOD to be back home.

I have heard people say that they actually call Graingers (I think that is the name, it was in an old old post) the industrial supply place right at Speeds corner and ask if Speed is there. I actually did this once and the secretary just looked out the window.

I have read all the posts and understand where the general area is, but I can't seem to figure out exactly where the cart is. If someone could give very specific directions with landmarks (e.g., in relation to the Victoria Diner, the Super 88, the jail, the pet store, etc.), I'd REALLY appreciate it.

Go to maps.google.com. In the first window, type in "54 Newmarket Square, Boston, MA". Zoom in on this map. Speed's is in the inside, southernmost corner of triangle made by the three streets that are all called Newmarket Square.
Or, take Mass Ave from the South End toward Roxbury. Continue past the big intersection for the Expressway and Melnea Cass Blvd, and take the first left after Victoria's Diner onto Newmarket Square. Speed's is about 100 yards up on the right, just opposite Grainger's Wholesale on the left.
