Some place quiet and not rushed, and not too expensive, in/near the Financial District.

Would love to hear suggestions!

The Radius $25 (or thereabouts) prix fixe isn't *too* too expensive. No. 9 Park, but also pricey. Maybe a banquette in Kingfish Hall.

The Cafe at the Ritz Carlton... a window table on Newbury Street. If you chose wisely, the menu does not require financing. And the service is superior to any other lunch environment, right down to table water in cobalt blue glasses. It is one of the few restaurants in Boston that follow the credo, 'it is impolite to rush'.

I really do understand you stated 'not over the top'. However, romantic, unhurried, quiet... they will not make you feel out of place.

While I never go there for dinner anymore, lunch at Mantra is a good deal, and rarely busy. It's a pretty space, with plenty of quiet corners.
