I had a very fine bistro-French meal at Cafe Le Royal, 1856 Centre St. Looks like it might be a bakery from outside, in fact is a modest, fairly priced, rather authentic little French place in the evening. Pleasant service, modest wine list. A very nice surprise.

West on Centre? Haven't tried it yet (it's on my list), though it's gotten good reviews here and in the Phoenix (see link).

West is fun and decent, unique bar scene for W. Roxbury. Spring St. Cafe by Rt. 1 is okay basic Italian. Someone here just mentioned that Tony's is good red sauce Italian. Yucatan Tacos is good and the cafe across the street is nice. Anna's Donuts further up Centre St. You need to actually try a few places to find the good ones.

yes, thanks - the crossiants at bay sweet market are unbelievable - all butter - make their own dough - the zatar ones are the best...
i've always been curious about anna's - are their donuts good - like homemade ones??

They're homemade; a little greasy, a little crispy, lighter than many donuts, good stuff.
Where's Bay Sweet Market?

on centre, oh i guess it's south street there, not centre - past the shaw's where the finagle a bagel is.. on the left, it's a syrian market - & oddly enough they make their own crossiants! also they get fresh syrian bread delivered daily - tuesdays they get a brand with a big green cedar tree on the package & it's the best bread, it makes great wraps!

tried the donuts at anna's yesterday - yes, they are good - there used to be a little place in brighton, oak sq., that had homemade donuts that were soooo good, anna's is not quite up there, but definately better than dd or krispy kreme... shouldn't be eating them anyway!

I'm still crushed over the demise of Fontaines.....

Fontaine's? The place with the awesome neon animated chicken sign on VFW Pkwy? Say it ain't so! I had me some good chicken in that place back in the day.
Now that I look into it, it turns out that it closed last year, and that some new place called (ironically) Vintage is being built on the site. Ah well. Memmmm-oh-reees!

When it comes to dining in West Roxbury, I am not a huge fan, but here are a few places that I really like(even though a few are in Roslindale):
-Samias on Centre - Very tasty chicken kabobs - I really like their humus too. This is probably my favorite place, but it does close early - around 7:30...
-The Greek place on Belgrade- I cannot remember the name right now. I have never been there for dinner, but their lunch sandwiches are great.
-Sophia's Grotto in Roslindale Village is also very good. There are a few threads in recent weeks so do I search. And, they have an outside eating area.
